A complaint Letter

Dear Mr. Smith,

I’m writing in reply to your letter informing me that the rent of my flat has been increased by 100%, I should like to register an extremely strong protest.

As you know I have lived in this flat for the last ten years and the lease has been renewed three times. The rent has risen, of course, but always, until now, by a reasonable amount. 100 %, though, is an absolute scandal, and I’m not prepared to pay such a large increase. Therefore, I’m afraid I will have to go the Rent Officer Office to have a fair rent fixed and I have, in fact, arranged an appointment to see him next week.

I personally think it is all wrong to ask the tenants to pay a large increase when nothing has been done to improve the condition of the flats. In fact the front entrance of the block is a disgrace; I am sure it is never cleaned and the porter is never anywhere to be found.

So once again I should like to say it is not fair to double the rents and offer nothing in return. No doubt you will be hearing from the Rent Officer Office shortly.

Yours sincerely,

Ronald Flames
